About Us

The Rural Renewable Energy Alliance (RREAL) is striving to address rural poverty with solar heat, foster energy security, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and break down the financial and informational barriers to the widespread use of solar energy.

By delivering solar heat to low-income families on public energy assistance, RREAL endeavors to make solar energy accessible to people of all income levels.

Like the digital divide that once severely separated communities’ access to the information age based on class, society is at risk of developing a renewable divide where the more affluent communities will have greater access to solar energy.

Yet, it is our lower income communities that are most gravely affected by the energy crises. When energy costs spike, our lower income communities are most vulnerable, having to devote a larger percentage of personal income to the basics of heat and electricity. By mitigating the impact of energy cost volatility, solar energy can dramatically reduce one of the root causes of poverty.

In order for our society as a whole to transition to a renewable and post-carbon economy, access to solar energy and other renewables must be made economically accessible.

RREAL’s many programs and services use solar energy to address rural poverty, foster energy security and self-reliance, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and ensure that people of all income levels have access to a viable technology. At a nexus of social and environmental justice, welcome to RREAL!

Our Mission

RREAL has the unique mission of making solar energy available to people of all income levels. Solar technologies present viable alternatives to fossil fuels that are both environmentally sound and socially empowering. In order for solar to be widely embraced, it must be available to people of all income levels. However, solar technology remains out of reach for many lower income households.

The cost of home heating is unpredictable, and has been rising every year for the last 30 years- much faster than people’s incomes. Since low income families devote a greater share of income to the necessity of heat, they are the most vulnerable to these increases and fluctuations in energy costs.

At RREAL, we seek to address these issues with solar energy. Our flagship program, Solar Assistance, installs solar heating systems in partnership with low-income families that qualify for public energy assistance. Solar Assistance fosters ecological health, social equity, and self-reliance. Solar heating technology is an environmentally and economically appropriate technology for helping meet the energy needs of people in poverty.
